Großräschen has a long energy tradition. Brown coal was mined in the region for more than a century and used as an energy source. The region experienced a cultural transformation after the strip mines were exhausted. Small and mid-sized businesses typify the Großräschen location today.
The manufacturing sector encompasses metal construction, recycling, logistics, and energy recovery. Thus the Großräschen location was also lucrative for EEW Energy from Waste (EEW). EEW Großräschen's energy from waste facility began operation in 2008. It burns around 260,000 tons of waste and alternative fuels annually.
