We are prepared to do what is important.Groundbreaking sewage sludge recycling with EEW Energy from Waste.
Sewage sludge is the waste product of sewage treatment. It contains everything which is filtered out of the sewage to maintain the purity of rivers, oceans, ground water and – not least – our drinking water reservoirs. Particularly the sludge from sewage treatment plants in cities and conurbations is significantly polluted with harmful substances such as heavy metals, organic pollutants, residues of pharmaceutical products, pathogens and microplastics. At the same time the sludge also contains the resource phosphorus. This nutrient essential for us all encourages plant growth, which is one of the reasons why sludge has for years been used as an agricultural fertilizer.
Municipalities need to act.
Today we know that agricultural use of sewage sludge has led to pollution of soil, bodies of water and ultimately also foodstuffs. In addition an excess of phosphorus has had a negative effect on water quality. Governments have responded to this and in 2017 the legal foundations were laid for a considerably more environmentally sustainable management of sewage sludge. Changes to the German Fertilizer Regulation (DüMV) affect the kinds of sludge that can be used in agriculture. From the beginning of 2019 fertilizers containing synthetic polymers may only be used if the quantities of synthetic polymers applied do not exceed 45 kg of active substance per hectare within three years. The effect of this is that from 1 January 2019 many types of sewage sludge will no longer be able to be used as fertilizers. Municipalities are required to act now. Let’s think ahead together.
EEW Energy from Waste is prepared to do what is important. As a partner of the municipalities we develop customised solutions to ensure groundbreaking and resource-sparing sewage sludge recycling. Particularly at current EEW locations this creates valuable synergies with existing waste incineration plants. Application of the innovative technology of sludge mono-incineration enables a phosphorus recovery rate of over 80 percent – thus ensuring that the legal requirements are reliably fulfilled.
A class of its own: sewage sludge mono-incineration.
Research has shown undisputedly that today sludge mono incineration with later phosphorus recovery in subsequent procedures represents a particularly efficient recycling method for sewage sludge. Firstly the thermal treatment reliably destroys harmful organic pollutants and neutralises possible pathogens. At the same time the inorganic pollutants (heavy metals, SO2, HCL) contained within the sludge are effectively caught by the gas purification plant. Another decisive point: in terms of resource protection mono incineration with subsequent phosphorus recovery is unbeatable. Only this method enables a phosphorus recovery rate of over 80 percent using subsequent processes. This ensures that the requirements of the legislator are reliably fulfilled.
Welcome to the future.
With the building of sewage sludge mono incineration plants at EEW plant locations which are today already ideally prepared for tomorrow, we are thinking far into the future and making investments which will be sustainably beneficial. Our expertise in plant construction guarantees farsighted planning with an eye on the overall picture and the needs of your region. Transparency and binding construction timetables are a given for us. Using the existing infrastructure at EEW locations creates useful synergies which reduce costs and are also beneficial for the environment. In addition, the EEW plant network in Germany and the neighbouring states offers municipalities significant advantages in the field of logistics and at the same time offers unique group coverage in case of outages. This enables us to guarantee a high level of disposal security.
