Sustainability

Energy is the basis of our lives - and as EEW we take responsibility for it.

For our environment and future generations.

With our corporate activity - the environmentally friendly generation of energy through thermal waste and sewage sludge utilisation - we are literally at the source. Waste is a valuable resource in a modern circular economy that can be used for the benefit of people, communities and companies in the region.

We face the challenges and constantly changing framework conditions such as economic and ecological change, the energy and heat transition and the limited availability of resources. Through our daily actions, we want to make a positive contribution to the environment and society.

Our Roadmap

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in society and the economy. Sustainable action - especially demonstrable action - is a central factor for companies today. For EEW, it has therefore long been part of our core business and an integral part of our corporate strategy.

We have aligned our actions and business activities in an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable manner. After all, in the future it will be decisive how and under what circumstances earnings are generated. Not only the creation of monetary success, but also the creation of ecological and social values are relevant for corporate success. This makes issues such as climate protection and conservation of resources, but also social progress, equal rights and opportunities, and health protection highly relevant. EEW faces up to this challenge and aligns both its strategic activities and its daily work accordingly. This applies to the operation of our plants, the development of new business areas and technologies, but also to our daily business processes.

Based on a materiality analysis conducted again in 2022, we have underpinned our efforts with a roadmap. This roadmap defines concrete goals and measures that serve as the basis for managing our sustainability activities.

You can find all the details on our goals and measures on our dialogue platform www.lets-talk-about-tomorrow.com.

Sustainability standards

In our sustainability reporting, we take into account internationally recognised standards and frameworks. The focus is on the Sustainability Reporting Standards (SRS) of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) - GRI Standards for short - the criteria of the German Sustainability Code (DNK) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

The GRI standards serve to ensure the international comparability of non-financial information published by organisations as part of their corporate reporting. With the help of the GRI standards, organisations report on relevant economic, environmental and social impacts related to their own business activities. The published information is used by different stakeholders to assess the sustainability performance of the reporting organisation or to compare the performance of different organisations.

The Sustainable Development Goals are an essential component of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by the member states of the United Nations in 2015. The goals are intended to lead to more environmental and climate protection, prosperity, social justice, self-determination and peace worldwide by 2030.

The SDGs are divided into 17 goals with a total of 169 sub-goals. We have analysed which of the 17 SDGs are of particular relevance to our business activities and what contribution we make to achieving these goals.

Since the 2019 reporting year, we have published an annual declaration of compliance in the database of the German Sustainability Index (DNK). With this declaration, we commit ourselves to aligning our actions and business activities according to the 20 defined DNK criteria in ecological, economic and social terms. Like the sustainability report, the DNK declaration is a contribution to greater transparency and comparability of sustainable performance. You can access our DNK declaration here.

Sustainability Reports

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in society and the economy. For EEW, it has therefore long been part of the core business and an integral part of the corporate strategy. Sustainable action - especially demonstrable action - is a central factor for companies today. We at EEW also see it as our responsibility to harmonise economic success with social and ecological aspects - and to communicate this transparently both internally and externally. We are part of the circular economy and are at the core of climate policy. For this reason, EEW has been publishing a sustainability report for several years, documenting the efforts our corporate group is making in this topic area and the progress that has already been achieved.
