EEW publishes Sustainability Report 2024 - Progress, responsibility and a call for political action

EEW Energy from Waste GmbH (EEW) today published its Sustainability Report for the 2024 reporting year. Building on the previous year's report, the company provides information on progress in the areas of environment, social affairs and responsible corporate governance. The report continues to follow the internationally recognized standard of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and underlines EEW's commitment to report credibly and transparently on goals, actions and impacts.

Measurable progress along the Sustainability Roadmap 2030
The report focuses on the Sustainability Roadmap adopted in 2022 with a target horizon of 2030. EEW documents concrete progress achieved, including:

  • A notable increase in training hours per employee, particularly in the area of digital skills
  • An increase in efficiency thanks to high plant availability and optimized processes
  • A strong customer satisfaction rating, confirmed by a recent survey that identifies EEW as a fair and reliable partner

"For us, sustainability is not just a central building block for a future-proof company - it is part of our corporate identity and deeply rooted in our business purpose. With the current report, we are reaffirming our long-standing commitment to  transparent communication of our progress - and at the same time transparently highlighting where challenges exist," explains Timo Poppe, CEO of the EEW Group.

CSRD at a glance: EEW assumes responsibility and prepares in a structured manner
The publication takes place against the backdrop of increasing regulatory requirements. In the reporting year,  EEW has already taken significant steps to prepare for the comprehensive requirements of the new EU directive on sustainability reporting (CSRD), which will significantly expand the content, scope and verification obligations in future. The current report therefore marks an important transition phase: EEW is creating the structural conditions at an early stage to further develop its sustainability strategy in line with the new reporting requirements - a clear signal to stakeholders, poliymakers and capital markets.

Climate neutrality requires more than just annual figures - EEW calls for a political framework for investments
EEW is clearly committed to the goal of ensuring climate-neutral waste recycling in the long term - in particular through technological innovations such as carbon capture. The company is not only showing intentions, but also concrete activities: it is investing in research, development and CO₂ projects in Germany and the Netherlands. At the same time, EEW makes it clear that progress alone is not enough if supportive policy frameworks and functioning market mechanisms fail to emerge

“Transparency also requires the courage to tell the truth,” emphasizes Poppe. "We wanted to be further ahead with CO₂ capture today - that puts our climate targets under pressure. But we don't just talk about climate neutrality, we act: We are actively investing in the future with concrete projects.  Climate targets need more than just a calendar date – they need infrastructure, innovation, and a clear policy framework. Without this, targets remain symbolic milestones without substance. That's why we make progress measurable, not calendar-based. We are ready - now it's the politicians' turn."
