3.45 Million Tons of Waste Put to Good Use
Over the past two decades, TREA has thermally treated approximately 3.45 million tons of residual waste. Compared to landfilling, this process has significantly reduced harmful greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, it has made a notable contribution to energy supply—generating electricity for over two million people and district heating for around 60,000.
A Forward-Looking Site in the Breisgau Business Park
TREA Breisgau is a model for sustainable circular economy practices. It replaces fossil fuels, recovers valuable metals from bottom ash, and protects the climate—without releasing landfill gases. Located on the site of a former military airfield, the plant’s design still reflects its aviation history. Innovation is part of its DNA, with carbon neutrality and CO₂ capture among the goals actively pursued.
“TREA is much more than a waste treatment facility. It’s a driver of climate protection and a reliable pillar of our regional energy system. In 20 years, we’ve sustainably treated around 3.45 million tons of waste while supplying millions of people with electricity and heat—a remarkable achievement. I want to sincerely thank our dedicated staff for making this possible. I also extend my thanks to our long-standing partners in the region, including the local communities, Abfallwirtschaft Breisgau (GAB), the Business Park administration, the regional authorities, and all partnering companies,” says Uwe Jolas, Managing Director of TREA Breisgau.
A Celebration of Community and Culture
The anniversary was marked in June with the “Rock am Ofen” music festival, which welcomed 2,000 guests. It was a special day that brought together industry, culture, and community.
