Climate-friendly heat over 20 kilometers
The core of the project is a 20-kilometer-long district heating pipeline that directly transports waste heat from Premnitz to Brandenburg an der Havel. This heat replaces the previously natural gas-based supply, saving up to 70,000 tons of CO₂ annually.
A location advantage for Premnitz
Thomas Rosenberg, Mayor of Premnitz: “The resource waste has been a reliable energy carrier for our industrial park for years. With the new connection to Brandenburg an der Havel, it becomes evident what potential this location holds. EEW Premnitz is a central partner for the sustainable development of our economic structure – a true location advantage for Premnitz.”
Reliable, future-proof and sustainable
Steffen Scheller, Mayor of Brandenburg an der Havel: “The idea of providing district heating in Brandenburg an der Havel through waste combustion in Premnitz was a long and not always easy path that we consistently pursued together with the municipal utilities of Brandenburg. We were and remain convinced by the idea and solution. Since last year, 12,000 households have benefited from affordable and sustainable heat. We spare our environment a significant CO₂ burden. And we can even expand these advantages by gradually connecting more households to the district heating network. Finally, this district heating project is a great example of forward-looking collaboration in our West Brandenburg economic region.”
Partner of the energy transition
Dr.-Ing. Klaus Piefke, Technical Managing Director of EEW Premnitz: “Waste is a domestic raw material and a reliable energy source. In Premnitz, we generate electricity and green heat every year from 300,000 tons of non-recyclable waste – ensuring energy supply for the industrial park. At the same time, we actively contribute to decarbonizing heating networks and implementing municipal heating planning with climate-friendly district heating. In the future, we aim to do even more: this summer, we will begin constructing EEW Group’s first battery storage system directly at this site. This will transform our plant into a flexible storage power station and make an important contribution to stabilizing power grids.”
Exploiting potential
Daniel Keller, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor, and Energy of Brandenburg: "Brandenburg is making good progress with municipal heat planning. Here in Premnitz, we can see how the heating transition can succeed in practice. This can also serve as a model for other municipalities facing similar challenges. The intelligent use of heat from industrial production or electricity generation is particularly important here. Using the potential of the process heat generated from waste combustion to supply heat to private households in Premnitz and Brandenburg an der Havel is a win-win situation for everyone. A significantly cheaper and CO₂ -free heat supply for the citizens as well as an additional benefit for the company and its employees. We want to continue to support this approach in Brandenburg."
